The Danger of COVID-19 in Pregnant Women - The Damage to the Baby's Placenta
Based on the results of the latest study, it is known that pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 have a higher risk of experiencing a condition called stillbirth, which is a condition in which the baby is born dead or the baby dies within 28 days after the birth process. In a study conducted on 64 babies who died after undergoing the birth process and four babies who also experienced neonatal deaths, it was found that all of these babies had placentas that were infected with SARS-CoV-2. The study was conducted in 12 countries involving 44 researchers. One more thing, all pregnant women involved are also known to have not received the COVID-19 vaccination.
In this case, it was found that the coronavirus works in a different way compared to the pathogens found in other diseases, where the pathogens in other diseases work by infecting directly to kill the fetus, while the Coronavirus works by causing the destruction of the placenta and depriving the fetus of oxygen levels. These findings have been published in the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
Placenta infected with SARS-CoV-2
Based on the results of studies that have been carried out, the SARS-CoV-2 virus can cause death in fetuses or newborns by causing severe and widespread damage in the placental area.According to the results of the study, placentas that have been infected with COVID-19 on average have the following characteristics,
- Has large fibrin deposits
- There is cell death in the trophoblast,
- This unusual inflammation is known as chronic histiocytic intervillositis.
The damage caused by infection with the COVID-19 virus is an average of about 77.7 percent of the entire placenta.A pathologist from Atlanta, United States, David Schwartz MD, quoted from WebMD revealed that he did not know that there was an infection that could cause severe infection to the level mentioned above.
David Schwartz MD and his team also emphasized that COVID-19 vaccination and antiviral therapy are effective in reducing the possibility of placental infection in pregnant women caused by SARS-CoV-2.
In line with the findings revealed by David Schwartz MD, the National Institutes of Health also managed to find a relationship between COVID-19 infection in pregnant women with moderate to severe infections that also increase the risk of experiencing pregnancy complications.
Pregnancy complications that can occur include death during childbirth, cesarean section, risk of premature birth, postpartum bleeding, and non-Covid infections.
